Careful analysis of scripture reveals that Yahushua was actively engaged with both spiritual (Luke 8:1; etc.) and material distributions (alms) (Luke 8:3; John 13:29) by and through his earthly ministry. Of course, this was not a new idea. Giving to the poor was supposed to be practiced by all of Israel by the minimal means of the third year tithe. Nonetheless, this practice was severly neglected, one of the several reasons why YHVH punished Israel, one of the reasons why Daniel's 70 Weeks decreed upon Israel appeared. But, neither should "alms giving" be the sole focus of any ministry. There should be a balance between spiritual ministry and charitable distributions (assistance). The early church (Acts 2 & 6) continued this practice as did Apostle Paul, who also received collections for alms giving (Acts 24:17; Romans 15:26; Galatians 2:10; etc.). Although Apostle Paul had the "scriptural right" to live off (be supported by) the ministry, he chose not to use any of the donations for that purpose and supported himself, instead, by working with his own hands (1 Corinthians 4:12).
